User Interface – Screens open in multiple companies
Why this feature is cool!
In Microsoft Dynamics SL 2011, you can now have screens or reports open for different companies at the same time. Let me say that again, you can have multiple screen or reports open in different companies at the same time! Let’s look at an example of how you can use this feature in conjunction with our new menu search to simplify your work.
You are working in Company A completing a new purchase order and reviewing open inventory. Maybe you even have a report open print preview when your manager comes running with a request to process a receipt of a purchase order item for Company B.
OLD WAY: Close the purchasing screen, inventory screen and the open reports. Click on the old switch company button and then choose Company B. Navigate to the receiving screen and open the screen. Success! Now to get back to your work for Company A, retrace each of the above steps.
NEW WAY: Click on Switch Company button and choose Company B. Instead of navigating through the menus, type the word “receipt” in the menu search field and select the receipt screen from the results list. To return to the purchase order for Company A, just click on the already open screen for Company A. Color coding and company name on the screens show you which company you are working with. No need to close any applications you were working on.
OR EVEN COOLER! You probably open the purchase order screen in Company B frequently. Use the navigation history feature to select the Company B Purchasing screen and Microsoft Dynamics SL will log you into Company B and open the Purchase Order screen in one click!
What does it look like?
In this example, there are four screens open in four different companies. The colors and names help distinguish which company a screen is logged into.
The Company Maintenance screen is used to assign a color to a company and provides a way to preview what the company icon will look like.
This is a very nifty feature, and we have been using it extensively at a number of our clients
However , we did come across an issue, please bear with me
If a transaction screen is open in Company A( lets Assume AP-Voucher and Adjustment) , and one then switches to Company B ( With the Transaction screen still open), then back in the Transaction Screen a currency, for what ever reason, needs to be changed from the base currency , this opens up the Currency selection screen that launches from the button in the Voucher screen.
The problem comes in here , when the Currency selection screen launches , it does not launch in the Transaction Screen's company ( Company A) but Rather launches in Company B. the Currency Selection Screen also only looks at the PV's from Company B. which proves that the Second screen actually launches from CompanyA>>Voucher Screen but physically opens the screen in in Company B.
This makes me beg the question , what about other screens that open in the background while
a batch is being posted i.e FTT, Project Allocations , Gl Posting etc. I shudder to think what would happen if the wrong company's Allocation processor opens and runs in the wrong company with similar yet different allocations rules or billing rules .
This might seem a little far fetched by now , but how can we be certain?
Is there a hotfix or a patch for this available ?
