Is there a way to find the list of open periods? from the database or from the applicaiton.
SL has a soft close which allows users to post back to closed periods. So the fiscal periods in SL aren't really marked as open or closed. SL is more concerned as to what the current period is. The current period is considered the "open" period".
If you are using a hard close application, then you would need to consult with the manufactuer of that application.
Carolyn, Thanks for your comment.
Is that mean there is only one "Open Period" on the system, since there is only one current period?
This is what i was trying to do:
When a user create a new batch during the voucher entry , Per to Post is defaulted to the current default Period. I am trying to find the list of open periods that havent been closed yet. so a user can create a batch in a period other than the defualt period but one thing I noticed that SL allows to create a batch even in a close period? Is this correct? This is strange?
Please explain if you have any insight. Thanks.
There is one current period. You can post to any period in the past that is within the retention periods set in GL Setup. When you close a period, the system changes the period in the setup tables so that the current period shows by default on the data entry screens. The closing process in some modules also moves ending balances of one period to establish beginning balances for the next period. But any of the periods that went through the closing process can be posted to. That's just how SL functions.
Thanks Carolyn, That is very helpful.
Yes, but does SL allow you to lock periods so users can no longer post to them. Most software solutions do not require a hard close or even a monthly soft close for that matter. But they do allow locking of periods so staff can not post to any period they want in the past.
Yes depending on which version you have installed. Starting with version 7.0 FP1, there are some posting options in the GL Setup screen which allow you to prevent users from posting to closed periods.
Thank you, we will be upgrading in March. Can you tell me does it allow you to lock or prevent postings on a period by period basis or just all or nothing.
It's an all or nothing type of thing - all periods all modules. In our next release of SL 2011, there will be this functionality by module. That release should happen late in 2012.
There is a hard close add-on utilitiy from third party provider IronWare.
