What’s happening?
Customers are experiencing insufficient SQL storage disk space when attempting to restore production data in a cloud-hosted environment.

Reason:
The existing SQL data disks are not large enough to accommodate the production database size, leading to the need for expansion or reallocation of disk space.

Resolution:

  1. Expand Existing Disk:
  2. To increase the disk volume, you can delete the existing disks and merge the deleted disk space with the existing disks. Note that you can only merge continuous drive serials (e.g., C and D) but not non-continuous drives (e.g., C and E).
  3. Attach a New Disk:
  4. Alternatively, you can attach a new disk from the Azure portal. This new disk can only be attached to the latest disk drive (e.g., if the latest disk is J, you can expand disk J with the new attached disk, but not disk K).
  5. Documentation Reference:
  6. For detailed steps on expanding virtual hard disks attached to a Windows VM in Azure, refer to the document: "Expand virtual hard disks attached to a Windows VM in an Azure - Azure Virtual Machines | Microsoft Learn".
