What’s happening?
Customers have questions regarding the licensing requirements for using Dynamics 365 mobile applications, specifically related to the transition from device-based licensing to user-based licensing and the implications of authentication changes.

Reason:
The change in authentication method from service-based to user-based authentication for Dynamics 365 mobile applications has raised concerns about whether this affects the type of licensing required (device or user).

Resolution:

  • For the use of the Dynamics 365 mobile applications, both device-based and user-based licensing can be applied.
  • Users must have the role of "Mobile Device User" assigned in Dynamics 365 to authenticate successfully.
  • If a device has a device-based license, the user logging in must still have the appropriate role assigned, regardless of whether the authentication is user-based or device-based.
  • There are no impacts on the type of licensing required due to the authentication method change; licensing can remain either by device or by user.
  • To validate the licenses for devices in use, follow these steps:
  • Navigate to the Mobile Devices workspace in Warehouse Management.
  • In the Summary tab, select an icon to open the corresponding list of devices.
  • Locate the target device in the list and select "Change Device Licenses" from the action panel.
  • Choose a new license status to assign to the selected device.
  • The following license statuses can be used:
  • Auto: Assigned to new devices until the system determines the correct license status.
  • License Required: The device needs a license that has not yet been acquired.
  • Licensed: Indicates that the necessary licenses for the device have been acquired.
  • Block Sharing: The device does not require a device license and can only be used by users of Supply Chain Management.
