What’s happening?
Customers are unable to connect to their Azure Virtual Machines (VM) via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The error message indicates that the user account has been locked due to too many logon attempts or password change attempts.

Reason:
The user account has been locked as a security precaution because there were too many unsuccessful logon attempts.

Resolution:

  1. Access the Azure portal.
  2. Locate the Azure VM that is experiencing the connection issue.
  3. Navigate to the Help section and select the option to reset the password.
  4. Enter a new user, which will be set as a local administrator for the Azure VM.
  5. Adjust the group policy to set the lockout policy:
  6. Go to Local Computer Policy.
  7. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Account Policies > Account Lockout Policy.
  8. Set the policy to allow 0 invalid logon attempts.
