What’s happening?
Customers are experiencing issues with deleting audit log data that is taking up excessive space and managing retention policies for audit logs. Specifically, they are unable to find the job responsible for deleting logs according to the updated retention policy, resulting in logs older than the specified retention period being retained in the system.
Reason:
The audit retention policy configured for a specific period is not retroactive, meaning it only applies to logs generated after the policy was set up. Logs created before the policy was established remain unaffected and need to be manually deleted if necessary.
Resolution:
To delete audit logs, customers can follow these steps:
- Sign in to the Power Platform admin center and select the relevant environment.
- Under Auditing, select "Delete logs."
- Choose how to select logs to delete.
- For detailed instructions, refer to the documentation on managing audit logs: Manage Dataverse Auditing.
- If the retention policy is not functioning as expected, it is important to note that the policy will take effect only once the configured retention period is reached. Logs created before the policy was set will need to be deleted manually.
- For bulk deletion of audit logs filtered by specific criteria, customers can utilize the Bulk Delete API. More information can be found in the developer documentation: Delete Audit Data.
- If the deletion process is taking longer than expected, it is due to the volume of records being deleted, which can be substantial.
