What’s happening?
Customers are experiencing confusion regarding the audit log usage in Dynamics environments, particularly when comparing environments with different retention policies. There is a specific concern about why a development environment is using more logs than a user acceptance testing (UAT) environment despite having a shorter retention period.
Customers are experiencing confusion regarding the audit log usage in Dynamics environments, particularly when comparing environments with different retention policies. There is a specific concern about why a development environment is using more logs than a user acceptance testing (UAT) environment despite having a shorter retention period.
Reason:
The increased audit log consumption in the development environment is due to a higher number of records compared to the UAT environment. The development environment has more than triple the number of records in the audit log table compared to UAT.

Resolution:
Understand that changing the retention policy from "Forever" to "365 days" will result in the deletion of logs older than 365 days. However, this change will only affect newly created records; existing records will remain until they exceed the new retention period.
For further details on managing audit log retention and deletion, refer to the documentation on Managing Dataverse Auditing.
