Applies to Product - Dynamics 365 Finance
What’s happening?
When opening a project from Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (version 10.0.41) using Microsoft Project 2016, the application remains stuck in a "syncing" state. Additionally, the "Open" button under the Dynamics 365 tab in Microsoft Project does not function, and no data is displayed during the syncing process, despite the Microsoft Project Client add-in being installed.
Reason:
This occurs because the integration between Microsoft Project 2016 and Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations relies on legacy technology. Microsoft has officially discontinued support for this integration due to de-investment in the legacy technology.

Resolution:
As confirmed by the Microsoft Product Group, there is no supported workaround or fix available for this due to the discontinuation of support for the legacy integration technology. Users experiencing this can temporarily continue using the existing Microsoft Project Client add-in, as it is expected to remain functional for some time without further support since January 2025.
The recommended alternative is to use the Dynamics client application directly for managing projects, as no further support or fixes will be provided for the Microsoft Project 2016 integration issue. Users should consult internally within their organization to discuss alternative solutions or workflows that do not rely on the unsupported integration.
