New Feature in #MsDyn365FO #MsDyn365SCM – Create Transfer order from Sales order line

I recently spent some time checking out some of the new features released in the latest D365 updates. One of the many things manufacturing, retail, and distribution companies need to be able to do is provide multiple sources for fulfilling their demand. In make-to-order scenarios, there has long been a feature to create a Production order or batch order directly from a sales order line.

Earlier this year, Microsoft added a new feature to provide the same functionality for Transfer orders.

Now let’s take a look at where this new feature is presented once you enable it. First, we will look at the sales order line itself. If you click on the Product and supply dropdown menu above the Sales order lines, you will see a new option “Transfer order.”

Clicking on this option will present a dialog screen to choose the From warehouse, Ship date, and update the Quantity.

It is important to note that this screen will not show what other warehouses have inventory. That would required a check from the Inventory button to view your on-hand inventory, or to use the Delivery alternatives option, which we will get to shortly. I also noticed, this does not create a Marking or Reservation automatically between the two transactions like you would see normally with Production orders created from a Sales order line. So it is worth reviewing what reservation settings you would like to initiate when using this option. Clicking OK in that screen will bring you to your new transfer order.

Next, let’s look at a great supply chain screen that was introduced in D365 and has kept getting added to, making it a critical screen in operations. If you click the same Product and Supply button from the sales order line, you can choose the View “Delivery Alternatives” menu.

Delivery alternatives is a really powerful form that gives users an overview of what other Sites, warehouses, and legal entities either have inventory, or what their options are for supplying inventory for the sales order line being reviewed. You can see External vendor options, warehouses available for transfer or shipping directly from, and even other legal entities that can fulfill your demand. On the left side of the screen is our “New transfer order” button introduced with the Feature we enabled.

There are two other portions of this form at the bottom to show expanded data on the line selected. The Availability information tab shows the actual quantity and date availability of stock based on the line you have selected in the Delivery alternatives selection above it. This is pretty similar to what you would see in ATP calculations.

And then finally, at the bottom, is the Impact of selected alternative tab. For example, is there a change in Ship date, Mode of delivery, or receipt date? Has the vendor or sourcing warehouse been updated? Is the quantity changed?

A simple, but effective new feature for enabling transfer orders from these screens definitely saves some steps in navigation and finding alternative options. New releases and quality updates keep coming, so keep an eye out to make sure your Supply Chain is operating at max efficiency in D365!
