Looking for ERP Software – or Lost in the Acronym Jungle?

To keep up in the world, it seems you need to learn a new acronym every month, and with the addition of email shortcuts, we can all get very confused, or even misled…a good friend of mine gave me a snapshot of her favorite acronyms several years ago, and none of those make my list today.

So what about owners or managers of companies trying to look for a solution for their business?  I have listed just a few of the more popular acronyms from 2010 used by professionals in our culture, which is the Microsoft Partner Channel.  We are a full service Gold Certified reseller of Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) software.

We try NOT to use too many acronyms while discussing solutions for our clients, since the same letters could have various meanings to people from different departments, backgrounds, and industries.  But if you are in the market for a software program to help support and automate your business processes (that is ERP or Enterprise Resource Planning in the acronym world), then this Top 10 list may help clarify a few things for you.  Of course there are many other acronyms we could have included, but we wanted to make it a useful and interesting list, not an exhaustive list of every acronym we could find.

ERP    Enterprise Resource Planning:  Software systems designed to support & automate the business processes of medium & large businesses. Usually include manufacturing, distribution, personnel, project management, payroll, and financials.

BPOS   Business Productivity On-Line Suite:  Microsoft’s cloud services, including versions of Exchange, SharePoint, Live Meeting , Office Communicator and Dynamics software.

CALS    Client Access Licenses: Associated with a server product e.g. SQL Server.

CRM   Customer Relationship Management: A widely implemented strategy for cultivating and managing your interactions with customers and leads.  Microsoft Dynamics CRM integrates with Microsoft Dynamics GP extensively.

EDI   Electronic Data Interchange: The direct transfer of data from one computer to another without the use of paper.

GP    Great Plains: Our software system of choice for the mid-market, encompassing all solutions for  ERP areas specified above.  Complete name is Microsoft Dynamics GP.

IMHO    In my humble opinion: One of those shortcuts now used frequently in email conversations.

RSS   Really Simple Syndication:  Technology you can use to have information sent to you, rather than having to go look for it.  Our favorite blogs to create RSS Feeds for are: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/gp/ and http://feeds.feedburner.com/ErpSoftwareBlog.

SaaS   Software as a Service:  Delivering software over the Internet or “Cloud Computing”.  Often associated with a “Pay as you go service”.

SEO   Search Engine Optimization: The process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid “organic” search results.

At Borek Business Solutions we like to keep our documentation, implementations, and software assistance concise and to the point.  We conduct webinars of new product features, send facts sheets to clients with relevant updates for their software, and keep in touch with their long and short-term goals.  You might even say we GED (“Get Er Done!”)  But we wouldn’t confuse you and create another confusing acronym now!
