BOMs are used to define the components that make up a finished item. From within the Items form in the Inventory Management module , you can define an Item as belonging to the Item Type – BOM.
Individual components within a BOM and known as BOM Lines. BOM lines can be of four distinct types :
- Item
Raw materials are typically defined within this type. - Production
Sub-assemblies which have their own sub-BOM would be define within this type - Phantom
Placeholder lines on a BOM which represent a sub-BOM which you do not want to reveal until the master BOM enters production. Inventory is not affected until the component is actually needed. - Vendor
Components which are purchased from a Vendor – a purchase order will be generated by the Master Planning system for these types of line.
Other Key Facts about BOMS:
- BOMs are version controlled via a header record stored in the Bomversion table.
- Before a version of a BOM can be used on a production order it must be approved and active. BOM versions have effective dates attached to them.
- An item cannot have more than one approved BOM version at any one time that span the same or overlapping effective dates OR are for the same quantity.
- A BOM is copied to a production order when it is raised so that it can be edited to use different components or quantities without affecting the master BOM version.
