USD – back, forward and refresh buttons

You may sometimes find it useful to add you common “Internet Explorer” type controls to a tab, such as buttons for back, forwards and refresh.

First off: A word of caution I have found that the back / forward buttons can be unreliable in USD. They seem to function correctly “most” of the time on session based tabs but often fail to operate on global tabs. I have however still documented them here for two reasons partly as they work sometimes but mainly as hopefully Microsoft will release a fix shortly.

The process to add back/forward/refresh buttons involves;

1. Create back action (and forward and refresh!)
2. Create a navigation toolbar for the hosted control. (And link to the control)
3. Add back (and forward and refresh) buttons to the toolbar. (And add actions)

Step One – Create Back action (and forward and refresh!)

Navigate to the actions areas of the Unified Service Desk settings and create a new action.

Below is an example action call for a back button.

Name: “Action Call – GoBack Fishing Location” (Sorry fishing again!! Basically you’ll create an action for back, forwards and refresh for each entity that needed it.)

Hosted Control: “Fishing Locations” (Essentially this control will relate to whatever tab you want to add the back ability to.)

Action: “GoBack” (In this example I’ve shown “GoBack” but you could also use “GoFroward” or “Refresh”)

Step Two – Create navigation Toolbar

Navigate to the toolbars section of the Unified Service Desk setting and add a new toolbar.

Create the toolbar (as we’ve done before!) not forgetting to go to the “Hosted Controls” navigation from the tool bar and link to the hosted control you created in step one.

After that you’ll be able to create the buttons for back, forward and refresh.

Step Three – Add back (and forward, refresh) buttons to toolbar

Screen shot in previous step was actually taken after this step had been completed! Each button will look like ….

Name: “Back”, “Forward” or “Refresh”

Image: “msdyusd_Back”, “msdyusd_Forward” or “msdyusd_Refresh” (All of these icons are supplied with USD but you could add your own webresources for different images if you’d like something different.)

Button Text: Left blank! (As I’m happy with just an icon for these buttons.)

Order: 1 for back, 2 for forwards 3 for refresh. (Can be whatever you want really, these values dictate the order of the buttons in the toolbar.)

Once you’ve saved each button don’t forget to add an appropriate action you created in step one.

You can now re-open USD and view your changes. Mine looked like this;
