Cloud Based IT for Government – The Wyoming Case

Community Member Profile Picture Community Member

cloud based IT for govenment - wyomingThe State of Wyoming is officially discontinuing all data center activities in favor of cloud based IT for government to serve its citizens and manage the business of running a state governmet, according to a recent article at InfoWorld.com.

As economic pressures continue to restrain government budgets, cloud based management software is likely to replace data center activities in many states, especially those states with smaller populations.

“Despite that fact, I’m hearing more excuses about not moving to the cloud and seeing few results,” said David Linthicum, the author of the article.  “Perhaps Wyoming taking the lead here will finally put an end to the foot-dragging by others. I sure hope so.”

While more populous states like California and New York will not likely abandon their servers anytime soon, Wyoming’s move will more than likely be under heavy scrutiny from other states and government agencies to evaluate whether or not cloud based IT for government is a viable solution.

With cloud based IT for government, including ERP and CRM software, agencies and municipalities that are under the gun to shrink spending can gain substantial cost savings over on-premise systems.  Cloud based IT for government means less money spent on IT staffing and system maintenance.

In addition to budgetary pressures, governments in the US are still experiencing a lot of pressure to become more eco-friendly.  Cloud based ERP software can help the public sector reduce energy usage and paper consumption to satisfy public cries for green friendliness.

“Simply put, cloud computing is a better path to provide taxpayer services and operate the business of running a state,” said Linthicum.
