Multi-currency and exchange rates
With Dynamics 365 for Financials, you can use multiple currencies throughout the system, including payables and receivables, general ledger reports, resources, inventory items, and bank accounts. As an example, issue an invoice in one currency and accept payment for that invoice in a different currency.
Exchange rates and feeds
Conversion from one currency to the next is managed by exchange rates. You can register exchange rates for each foreign currency and specify currency format as well as from which dates the exchange rates are valid. For example, you can enter daily exchange rates, monthly exchange rates, or quarterly exchange rates for each foreign currency.
You can retain historical exchange rates in the Currency Exchange Rates window for reference purposes, and you can use the Exchange Rate Adjustment option to adjust receivables and payables and post unrealized gains/losses to the general ledger.
Many online currency exchange rate feeds are available across countries, such as Yahoo, Bank of Canada, European Central Bank (ECB), and so on, and most of these can be configured and consumed in Dynamics 365 for Financials to get currency exchange rates updated without the need for manual typing.
You can set up exchange rates to be updated from a feed on a recurring schedule, or manually update them when you desire. In Financials, the Yahoo exchange rate feed is available out of the box in US and CA.
General Ledger Accounts
You cannot link currency codes to general ledger accounts because amounts on general ledger accounts must be in your local currency (LCY). If you have a bank loan in USD and place deposits in a bank account in CAD, you can keep track of these accounts by setting up bank accounts in USD and CAD. With posting groups, you can link the accounts to the relevant general ledger accounts. In the general ledger, the value of the amounts is shown in LCY.
You can enter a currency code on a general journal line and post the line to a general ledger account. The relevant exchange rate is used to convert the amount to LCY before it is posted to the general ledger account.
Note: You'll have to set the experience to Suite in the Company Information window to work with currencies. For more information, see Customizing the Dynamics 365 for Financials Experience.

Thank you for the clear explanation on the multi-currency functionality in Dynamics 365 for Financials. We are using the Business Edition. You mentioned that the multi-currency functionality can also be used with inventory items. My question is how can we set up inventory items with a currency other than the local currency? Our LCY is GBP, but we trade internationally and use USD prices. We need to have USD prices for our inventory items. I would be grateful for any assistance.
