Malcolm Gladwell and ERP Software
Award winning author Malcolm Gladwell is not generally someone I would associate with the topic of ERP software. But ever since it was announced that he would be a keynote speaker at the Microsoft Dynamics Convergence 2011 event, I seem to see his name come up again and again related to our industry.
An interesting post from Panorama Consulting, The Tipping Point of ERP Systems, discusses the principles of Malcolm Gladwell’s first book, “The Tipping Point”, as it relates to ERP software. “In cases where an ERP software has already been selected, companies and their employees typically reach a tipping point to either accept the ERP system or resist it….organizational change management is instrumental to ensuring that a tipping point is reached, either during the evaluation of potential ERP vendors and/or during the implementation of the selected software.” I really like the way this author uses insights from the book and relates it to familiar attitudes in the workplace.
And another post on MS Dynamics World, Author Malcolm Gladwell Examines Interface of Technology and Professional Bias, recaps the Convergence keynote with principles from Gladwell’s second book, “Blink”. The post gives examples to support these three points;
1) Technology can improve transparency
2) Technology can simplify the decision-making process
3) Technology can improve the judgment of professionals
I have already downloaded the next Malcolm Gladwell book, “Outliers” on my eReader. Hopefully I can find a way to relate what I learn to ERP Software so I can write the next inspiring post. Or perhaps Microsoft will invite Mr. Gladwell to speak at Convergence 2012 in Houston, Texas and he can give more of his own insights related to technology and ERP software.
