If you’ve ever had a laboratory test chances are the lab you visited was certified and accredited by COLA (cola.org). COLA is the largest clinical laboratory education, consultation, and accreditation organization in the U.S. Of the over 20,000 laboratories for which accreditation is required, over 30% are COLA customers. But COLA is not stopping there. Through the innovative use of technology and applications integrated using Scribe Insight, COLA is taking their offerings to the next level on a quest to increase their market share another 30%.
For most of us not familiar with laboratory accreditation, here is a high level overview of how the system works. COLA surveyors travel to independent laboratories to perform reviews so the lab’s accreditation can be renewed. The surveyor arrives armed with a laptop computer running an application which contains COLA’s records of the lab. This information includes staff and staff credential records. Each laboratory is required to make COLA aware of changes to this information as staff come and go and their credentials change. This can be a laborious task given the high turnover associated with laboratory staff so citations for incorrect or incomplete information were traditionally high.
This is where technology and Scribe integration play a key role. COLA, along with their technology partner BroadPoint Technologies, has integrated Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft SharePoint, a custom accreditation application and their laptop survey application, creating a single integrated solution.
