What is OData?
OData is a standard protocol for performing some action on data or in simpler terms we can say an approach or set of rules which is used for creating or consuming Data. Means we can Write or Read or even Delete the data.
Means this will be able perform all CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) Operations. Current article focuses on reading the data.
Reading as in we can get that particular data from FO to different system, lets say for example here Postman.
So in regard with F&O, the URL for accessing data w.r.t OData is like below.

Just need to suffix the base URL with data.
Unfortunately this doesn't retrieve us the data we expect if the table which we are trying to access is of legal entity specific. This may work, if the admin who is accessing has the privilege to see the data from that company and also if done within FO application.
To get data across companies we need to add a cross-company keyword.
<F&O URL>/data?cross-company=true
The "?" here says that we are adding some query parameters. The "?" here is the identifier so that OData Engine knows/understands that based on this Key, it needs to do something. And then the cross-company keyword will retrieve all data from all companies if its value is true.
Similarly we have many keywords. These keywords will be added to the URL with some formatting. Technically speaking these keywords are actually the keys where they expect some value as an input. The values can be in integer or some string type.
F&O supports below Keywords for fetching data.
- cross-company
- $filter
- $count
- $orderby
- $skip
- $expand
- $select

Key Value Approach.
When querying data from an entity using OData, we often need to change the API a.k.a URL. But it is bit sometimes difficult to keep the exact syntaxes with us. Instead of that, we can make use of any Application like Postman which serves the purpose with ease.
If we have these syntaxes handy, same can be searched directly in the VM's browser too :)
For this demo purpose I have created a "Training"/"UAT" variable for holding my F&O URL within the collection.
In the Postman we have something called Query Params called parameters.

Now lets say if we have the api like 1 from above.
To get data across companies, we will specify "?" and cross-company=true in the URL.
On adding "?" in the URL, it adds or checks the "Key" in the Parameters like below.
And then whichever keyword we add, that will be appearing as a Key and Value. Let's say we may be adding cross-company.
In vice-versa, let's say if we have api like 1, then we simply write cross-company in the Parameters. It shows the URL updated with "?" and "cross-company" which means same as writing these keywords at URL or API but in a simpler way. In this approach, we only need to remember the Keys and respective values. The URL will be taken care by Postman.
Let us now apply the above approach for all the Keywords available.
Actual Implementation:
The Request Type is commonly GET since we are retrieving data from F&O.
cross-company: To get data from all the companies. This is similar to the crosscompany keyword which we use in X++ to retrieve data across companies.
Key : cross-company
Value: A Boolean value which can be true or false.
Eg: cross-company true
$filter: To filter a query with where condition. This is similar to the "where" in X++/SQL select query. We have many built in operators for this keyword. More information of this filter will be explained in my next blog on this.
$select: To specify the field list while retrieving data.
Key : $select
Value <FieldName1> , <FieldName2>
eg: $select CustomerAccount , dataAreaId
$orderby: To order based on a or some fields.
Key : $orderby
Value <FieldName> asc or desc
eg : $orderby CustomerAccount desc

$skip: This skips the number of records which are specified. Lets say here I specified 605. Means 605 records will be skipped.
Key : $skip
Value positive integer value.
eg: $skip 10
$count: This fetches total number of records.
Key : $count
Value : true or false
eg :
$expand: Retrieves data of related tables. tables we will understand more about this in next article.
$top: Retrieves the provided count number of records from top. This is similar to the firstonly or firstonly10 keyword which retrieves those many number of records from top.
Key : $top
Value : Positive Integer
eg: $top 20
