Recently, I wrote about the use of Excel Report Integration to pull data from Microsoft Dynamics GP into Excel. Today I’d like to discuss another great tool; one that is not specific to Microsoft Dynamics GP. That tool is SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).

SQL Server Reporting Services is a tool available with Microsoft SQL Server versions 2005 and higher. Using SSRS, you can write reports that pull data directly from database tables. Some advantages of using SSRS include:

Data is “live”. You can refresh the data to see new results at any time, so unlike a printed report, information is always up-to-date.
You do not need to log in to Microsoft Dynamics GP, so no user license is required.
SQL Server Reporting Services is included with Microsoft SQL Server, so no additional purchase is needed.
You can schedule SSRS reports so they run automatically and publish to a specific location.
You can export results easily into Excel for further analysis or manipulation.

SQL Server Reporting Services includes a report wizard to help make report writing easier. However, some knowledge is needed of the Microsoft Dynamics GP data tables to know which ones to use and how to link them to get the information you need.
