Installing Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 1 On-premise Demo: System Requirements

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of the Installing Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 1 On-premise Demo series in which I am creating a demo series for learning/demonstrating Business Central.

The full system requirements for Business Central are available on Microsoft Docs. In this post, I’m listing out the requirements for running Business Central in an offline learning/demo environment; I will be missing some functionality, such as that around email, but am concentrating on the core functionality.

The below is not the configuration you’d be using for a full production installation, but only for a more limited test/demo system.

Server

Specification Requirement
Supported operating systems
  • Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education (64-bit edition).
  • Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education (64-bit edition).
  • Windows Server 2022 (Datacenter, Standard).
  • Windows Server 2019 (Datacenter, Standard).
  • Windows Server, version 20H2 or later (Datacenter, Standard).
Hardware resources
  • Hard disk space: 2 GB.
  • Memory: 8 GB.
Additional software
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.
Additional information Business Central Setup installs the following software if it’s not already present on the target computer:
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8
  • Windows Identity Foundation.
  • Report Builder for SQL Server 2019.

Web Server Components

Specification Requirement
Supported operating systems
  • Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education (64-bit edition).
  • Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education (64-bit edition).
  • Windows Server 2022 (Datacenter, Standard).
  • Windows Server 2019 (Datacenter, Standard).
  • Windows Server, version 20H2 or later (Datacenter, Standard).
Web server
  • Internet Information Services 10.
Additional software
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 5.0.
Additional information Business Central Setup installs the following software if it’s not already present on the target computer:
  • Microsoft .NET Windows Server Hosting 6.0.1. This software is installed by Business Central Setup if not already present.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 5.0.
  • Internet Information Services 10 is installed with the required features enabled.

Database Components

Specification Requirement
Database
  • Compatibility levels 150 and 140 are supported.
Service Packs and Cumulative Updates
  • All service packs and cumulative updates are supported unless otherwise stated.
Additional information Business Central Setup installs the following software if it’s not already present on the target computer:
  • SQL Server 2019 Express (64-bit edition).
  • Report Builder for SQL Server 2019.

Desktop App

Business Central does not have a traditional desktop application, but is instead accessed via the web browser.

Specification Requirement
Supported browsers
  • New Microsoft Edge, latest version.
  • Google Chrome for Windows, latest version.
  • Mozilla Firefox for Windows, latest version.
  • Safari for macOS, latest version.
  • Cookies and JavaScript must be enabled in the browser.
Additional information
  • Business Central Web Server configured for HTTPS.

Microsoft Office Applications

Business Central on-premises offers various features that require Office apps to be available on client devices.

Specification Requirement
Excel
  • Sending data to Excel requires Excel 2019, Excel on the web, or Excel mobile app for iOS or Android .
  • Editing in Excel using the Excel Add-In requires Microsoft Office 2019 or Excel on the web.
Word
  • Microsoft Office 2019, Word for the web, or Word mobile app for iOS or Android .
