ERP Implementation Roi

High ROI with low TCO WhitePaper

Perhaps the first priority that comes to mind when an organization begins the process of new ERP implementation is return on investment (ROI).  Unfortunately ERP implantations are so often viewed as a necessary evil rather than an opportunity to drive growth, improve collaboration, innovate or take a start-up out of research and development into production.  The first step to having a favorable outcome in terms of ERP implementation ROI is to proceed with the frame of mind that the system will be solution to grow and succeed.

A recent article at Panorama Consulting listed five considerations for ERP implementation ROI success.

1. Set the bar high for your ERP implementation
This alludes to the idea that rather than operating out of fear of failure, and ERP implementation should be acted on with the mentality of, How will the ERP functionality take your business to the next level.

2. Focus on people and processes, not technology
While the bells and whistles of a solution can wow you, the success of the project in terms of ROI will come down to how well you handle organizational change management and employee use of the system to drive business.

3. Don’t underestimate the cost, time and effort required for your ERP implementation
Setting realistic expectations in the first days of the project is the key to a successful successful ERP implementation ROI.  While implementation partners offer their own cost estimation, organizations should be more conservative and assume going into the project that it will go over the vendor estimation.

4. Understand where the finish line really is
“…due to inadequate and misestimated time, budget and resources, most organizations end up quitting the race early and never realizing that expected functionality.”

Much like number three, avoid missing deadlines or leaving functionality out of the implementation in favor of completing the project on time by over estimating the schedule.  If the worst that comes from this is that you complete the project way ahead of schedule but get all the functionality you set out to obtain, all the better.

5. Focus on the long-term alignment between your business and your new ERP system
Go into the project with the knowledge that there is no true “end” to the ERP implementation. Your business processes and employees are constantly evolving. The same is true with the markets in which you do business.  So your ERP system has to be a living thing that changes with the times in order to avoid misalignment with processes.
