Issue While Opening Sales Return Order for Approval

Hello Experts,

A user created a Sales Return Order (SRO) and sent it to me for approval. However, when I attempt to open the SRO to review it before approving, I encounter an error message stating: "Attempted to divide by zero."

Could you please help me understand what might be causing this issue?

I have the same question (0)

This error primarily shows up when there is a calculation in a document with a zero included. There could be a 0$ unit price or cost for example. I would actually recommended that a developer go through debugging to determine what is happening when you try to open that SRO. They would then be able to tell which calculation is causing the problem.

As a preliminary step you can also try using the performance profiler: Performance Profiler overview - Business Central | Microsoft Learn

That tool will help you confirm if it's just the BC application being run or if there is a customization or add-in that could potentially be causing the issue.

    Hi,

That “Attempted to divide by zero” message usually means something in that Sales Return Order has a value of zero where Business Central expects a number — so it tries to calculate something like Amount ÷ Quantity or Amount ÷ Currency Factor and blows up.
Here’s how you can troubleshoot it quickly:

    Check for zero quantities
Open the Sales Return Order Lines and look for any lines with Quantity = 0 (or Return Qty. to Receive = 0) while still having a Unit Price or Amount filled in.
→ Either set a valid quantity or clear the amount/price.

    Check the currency factor
If the SRO uses a foreign currency, open the Header and check Currency Factor.
If it’s 0, that’s the issue — there’s no exchange rate for that date.
→ Update your Currency Exchange Rate table for that currency/date, or temporarily remove the currency.

     Check Unit of Measure setup
For each item on the document, make sure the Qty. per Unit of Measure is not set to 0.
→ Go to Related → Units of Measure on the Item Card to check.

    Look at item charges
If the SRO has Item Charge lines, check that Qty. to Assign isn’t zero.
A charge line with zero quantity but a nonzero amount will trigger the same error.

If you found this helpful please mark it as verified

Nine times out of ten, it’s a zero quantity or zero currency factor that’s behind this error.

This appears to be a customization issue; please contact your partner for troubleshooting.

    Hello,

The “Attempted to divide by zero” error occurs when a calculation divides by a field that equals zero, often in tax, discount, or quantity formulas. It’s commonly triggered by customizations or a zero quantity/amount on a sales line.

Verify all sales return lines have non-zero values.
Temporarily disable any custom extensions and reopen the order.

If corrupted, re-create the approval or the document.

    Regards,

    Hi
This message is almost always related to customizations; I suggest you check it at that level. If it's a standard issue, it warrants a ticket being submitted for review by Microsoft.
