Substitute Component Items in Assemble-to-Order

Hi:
 
In a Sales Order where the one line item is an Assemble-to-Order line item, or kit (Assembly), I know that you can add a component item upon clicking the ellipsis button in the "Quantity to Assemble to Order" field.
 
But, to remove a component and replace it with another, would both the "new" component need to be configured as a substitute item for the "old" component?
