Service Items Had To Be Imported as Inventory Items

Hi:

The Configuration Package for the Item Master table wouldn't let me import and apply Service type items.

Instead, in the "apply" window, I was forced to manually change the type to Inventory in order to apply the items.

Why?

Thanks!

John

This is usually related to other fields validating when you load items into BC. You can turn off validation on configuration package fields and then load those items.

    Hello,

Your package uses an Item Template set for Inventory type. When applying, BC validates against that template, so Service items fail.
Fix: add the Type field and use a Service-item template or no template.

    Hi,

System will give you an error if you already generated item ledger entries using that "Type" Item and give you the below error.

You can block those items and can create new item master with Type "Service".

    Hi,

: because Service items are non-inventory, and your config package likely included inventory-only fields. BC validates on Apply, sees fields that don’t make sense for Service (e.g. Inventory Posting Group, Costing Method, Item Tracking Code, Replenishment/Planning fields), and blocks it. When you switched the Type to Inventory, those fields became valid, so Apply worked.
How to fix it next time:
    •    Make a separate package for Service items with only allowed fields: No., Description, Type=Service, Base UoM, Gen. Prod. Posting Group, VAT Prod. Posting Group, Unit Price/Cost, Item Category Code.
    •    Exclude inventory/warehouse/manufacturing fields (Inventory Posting Group, Costing Method, Item Tracking, Replenishment/Planning, bins, etc.).
    •    Or do it in two passes: pass 1 sets minimal fields with Type=Service; pass 2 adds any other allowed fields.

    Hello,

The Configuration Package in Business Central doesn't allow direct application of Service type items because it enforces validations meant for Inventory items, which include fields not relevant to Service items.

As a result, Service items often fail during the "Apply Package" step unless manually changed to Inventory type, which satisfies the system's validation rules.

To work around this, you can import Service items separately and update them post-import using manual edits, scripts, or automation tools.
