Full Material Picking for Partial Consumption in Production – D365 F&O

Question:
Hi Experts,

I am working on a requirement in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations related to raw material picking for production orders and need guidance on best practice.
Business Scenario:

  • Raw material (Glue) is procured in fixed packaging of 5 Liters (CAN)
  • In production, actual consumption is variable (e.g., 400 ML, 500 ML, etc.)
  • Physically, warehouse can only issue full container (5L) — partial picking (e.g., 500 ML) is not possible at warehouse level
Current Challenge:
When I release the production order to warehouse, system generates picking workorder based on required quantity (e.g., 500 ML), but business requirement is to always pick full 5L CAN.

Expected Behavior:
  • System should generate picking for full License Plate (5L container)
  • Production should consume only required quantity (e.g., 500 ML)
  • Remaining quantity (e.g., 4.5L) should stay available at production input location for future use or return
Questions:
  1. What is the recommended standard approach in D365 F&O to handle this scenario?

Any guidance, best practices, or real project experience would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance!

    Hi Shubham,

You can use the over-picking feature in case you are using the advanced warehousing with mobile devices. You can read more about this here: Over-pick materials for production and batch orders - Supply Chain Management | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn
