Has anyone had the need to merge items to eliminate duplicates? I have been searching for a solution for 4 years. I have now created my own extension, and it is a game changer.

Could you please share a bit more about what exactly you built and how it works?
When you say “merge items”, what do you mean in Business Central terms? For example:
Are you combining duplicate Items by name into a single item?
Are you transferring ledger entries, stock quantities, and history from one item to another?
Or do you mean something like item packaging, variants, or BOM-related consolidation?
Also, what problem was the extension solving specifically (data cleanup, migration, duplicate creation, etc.)?
The more details you can provide, the easier it will be for others to understand the use case and maybe suggest alternatives or improvements.

Here is the sample input form for Item Merge.

It takes the entire ledger of one item and compiles into the target item. All the sales and purchase history are maintained in the new record. The hard part was to replace all the information into certified production BOMs.

You have the option to test first. You can choose to keep the old item number. Since that number won't have any ledger entries attached, you can either Block it or auto Delete the item.

This is extremely helpful for us since a lot of the items we buy are homogenous between various vendors and manufactures. Once we combined many different items, our EOQ stocking program was able to identify cost saving purchase amounts, along with stocking options.

Depending on the quantity of ledger entries and BOM component usage it can take 5-30 seconds to complete. Once completed, the program advises you to run the Adjust Costs - Item Entries task.

I was gathering interest for an extension to seek approval from Microsoft to have in their App Source. It has worked wonders for me as several ubiquitous items have been ordered until different item cards. This allows us to keep all the sales history for EOQ statistics.

I appreciate your effort. But from my point of view item merging functionalities is not good approach where so many dependencies are exists specially for those open entries where tracking and reservations are enables .

@PRao, This already handles all of your concerns. It even modifies open and closed BOM's, all ledgers and records of such. So much so that you can, or it will automatically if you choose, delete the previous item. It you want, you can leave the old item, and/or Block if you choose, but it seemed pointless to me to leave it. But, I did so anyway for user options.
