Purchase Order Lines - Comments Field

Would like to find out how to update the data in the "Comments" field it Purchase Order entry- line detail.  The field is not enabled for edit so I am assuming some other action updates the data but I can't tell where it might come from.  Would like to repurpose the field for other data but don't want to step on something that might be system triggered.
