Default Value getting cleared on Ownership change of Environment variable Definition record

Environment Variable Definition "Default Value" is cleared or becomes inaccessible following an ownership change.

  • Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Create an Environment Variable with a populated Default Value.
    2. Change the Owner of the Environment Variable Definition record to a different User or Team.
    3. Observe that the Default Value is either physically cleared from the record or no longer returned by the Dataverse API/UI for the new owner.
  • Impact: Critical configuration data is lost or hidden, causing failures in integrated Apps and Flows that rely on these variables for environment-specific logic.

When changing ownership of an Environment Variable Definition record in Dataverse, the default value may be cleared because the Default Value column is part of the definition table and can be lost if the underlying record, or its associated Environment Variable Value record, is improperly handled during migration or ownership transfer.

    Key Causes & Fixes:
    • Stale Current Value: A stale 'Current Value' in the Environment Variable Value table can prevent the default value from saving.
    • Import/Export Issue: When moving solutions, if the default value is not removed before export, it can cause conflicts.
    • Workaround: Update the Environment Variable Value table directly via Excel or re-import the solution after clearing values in the source.

To fix, edit the environment variable in your solution to clear the current/default values, then re-save, or delete the specific Environment Variable Value record causing the conflict.
