Default Dimensions for Customers

I'm noticing that Default Dimensions is not working for Customers in 365 Business Central the same way that it works for G/L accounts and Vendors. I have these dimensions defined; however, they are NOT flowing through to the lines of the Sales Invoice that I create for the customer. I do get an error when posting. Is there a bug around this or another setting that needs to be enabled for this to work correctly? My search isn't returning anything other than how I have it configured.
I have the same question (0)

    Hello,

In Dynamics 365 Business Central, Default Dimensions for Customers typically apply to the Sales Invoice header but don’t automatically flow to the lines unless dimension priorities are correctly set.

If the Customer’s dimensions have lower priority than those of Items or G/L Accounts, they may be overridden or ignored, causing posting errors—especially if “Same Code” is enforced.

To resolve this, check and adjust dimension priorities, ensure proper value posting settings, and validate dimensions on both header and lines, particularly when using imports or automation.

This behavior is a known limitation, not a bug.

Just to add on to what Jainam has mentioned. If you are unsure what your Sales "Source Code" is you can confirm it by navigating to the Source Code Setup page and confirming what is setup there as the source code for sales:

Then you want to navigate to dimension priorities and make sure you priorities are set accordingly for that source code (Customer table as number 1 priority)

That should resolve but if not you may need to review some other setup.

    Hi,

Agreed with what other experts suggested. It might be possible that when you choose your G/L or Item at line level, that might override the dimensions that were meant to be fetched from Customer you chose at header level.

You can create a small custom app if you want to change the standard behaviour.

    Hope this helps,
    Aman K

Default Dimensions work the same way for Customers as they do for G/L Accounts and Vendors.

You’re likely seeing the error because of a setup issue. Check if the G/L accounts used in your sales document have Default Dimensions assigned. If they do, that could explain why the Sales Header dimensions aren’t flowing down to the lines, your Dimension Priorities may be configured so the G/L Account dimensions take precedence over the Customer dimensions.

    To confirm:

    1. Check if the G/L accounts you’re using have Default Dimensions assigned.
    2. Review the setup on the Default Dimension Priorities page.

Hi, hope the following helps as well.
Dynamics 365 Business Central: Default Dimension Priorities (Avoiding conflicts)
Dynamics 365 Business Central: Set up default dimensions for specific accounts/tables (Account Type Default Dimensions)

    Thanks.

    Hello,

Customer default dimensions aren’t copying to sales lines because dimension priority gives precedence to Item or Location.
Fix: set Customer higher in Default Dimension Priorities so it applies first.

It’s expected behavior in Business Central. By design, Default Dimensions from the Customer are applied first to the Sales Header, but the Sales Lines (Item, G/L Account, or Resource) may override them depending on dimension priorities and value posting settings.
