Confirmed ship date issue

When a line is created on a sales order, we input the confirmed date to insure that the order is delivered on time. Once the order is picked, that date appears to get locked in for that sales order and subsequent lines which have later or even future dates display the confirmed date from the original picked line. How can the picking list registration confirmed date be set to the confirmed ship date from the sales order line?
