How do you work with multiple windows in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Hello there!

I have an question about program capabilities in general. How do you work with multiple windows in Business Central?

For exaple: I created an invoice of sales and want to immediately see which accounts the entries are scattered across (I go to the  trial balance) and at the same time see how the cost of goods has changed (on the Items page).
Question: how do You switch between pages correctly so as not to close the last page? i understand that if I open one document, then immediately open another one. When I close the last document I opened, the previous one remains open, but I want the last one to remain open as well.

Thanks for advance
I have the same question (0)

Usually i open in multiple Tabs , Duplicate Tabs and open page which you are looking for .

Keep one main Transaction Tab, other REporting Tab ,and third which will be flucutating

Example :: Sales Invoice Tab , Trial Balance Tab will be open

When you open third tab you navigate several pages to& Fro ( example - item  customer vendor etc)

For Third tab you can use back arrow to close pages for navigation

Best practice for analysts/consultants:  Keep one main “transaction” tab and one “reporting/review” tab.

    Hi,

There is no built-in feature to keep multiple documents open within the same session window. The recommended approach is to use browser tabs.

    Thanks

    Hi @Siolon

Just want to share one more alternative approach (though browsing via multiple tabs might be more feasible) i.e. Split view.
    1. Open your first Business Central window (e.g., Sales Invoice).

    2. Open the second page in a new browser tab or window (e.g., Trial Balance).

    3. Drag one window to the left edge of the screen until it “snaps” to half the screen.

    4. Select the second window from the thumbnails to snap it to the right half.

    5. Now you can see both pages side by side.

    Shortcut:

    • Press Windows Key + Left Arrow for the first window, then Windows Key + Right Arrow for the second.

    Hello,

You can Open Multiple Browser tab by using the "Duplicate Tab" Option.

It sounds like the best solution for you is to open multiple browser tabs, since Business Central allows you to open and view different documents in separate tabs at the same time.

    Hi,

You can open multiple tabs in your browser — for example, keep the Trial Balance open in one tab and Transactions or Items in another.

If your screen is large enough, you can also open two separate browser windows and place them side by side.

This way you can just F5 after every transaction to only update to data on the pages, and avoid reloading/reopening the pages again and again.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello,

In Business Central, each page opens in the same browser tab, so only one stays active. To keep multiple pages open, use one of these:

Ctrl + click or middle-click a link to open it in a new browser tab or window.

Or right-click → Open link in new tab.

That way, you can view your invoice, trial balance, and items simultaneously.

    Regards,

    Hi,

Multitasking in BC is possible, but it works differently than in legacy NAV clients. Since BC runs in a browser, it doesn’t support native multi-window navigation like desktop apps. However, you can still manage multiple views effectively.

    Here’s how to do it:

    • Open pages in new tabs or windows
      • Right-click on any link or page title and choose “Open link in new tab” or “Open link in new window”
      • Alternatively, use Ctrl+Click or Middle-click to open pages in a new tab
      • This lets you keep your original page (e.g., Sales Invoice) open while viewing Trial Balance or Item Card in another tab

    • Use the “Pop-out” icon
      • On many pages, especially cards and documents, you’ll see a small icon in the top-right corner
      • Clicking this opens the page in a separate browser tab with its own context
      • This is ideal for comparing entries or referencing related data without losing your place

    • Switch between tabs efficiently
      • BC now uses context-aware tab naming to help you distinguish tabs (e.g., “Item Card – ATHENS Desk” or “Trial Balance – FY2025”)
      • This makes it easier to navigate using Alt+Tab or browser tab previews

    • Use browser features to organize views
      • You can drag tabs into separate windows and place them on different monitors
      • Use browser extensions or split-screen tools if you need persistent side-by-side views

    • Limitations to be aware of
      • Modal dialogs (e.g., confirmation popups) still block the current tab
      • You cannot open multiple instances of the same record in edit mode, only one can be active at a time
      • AL code cannot force new windows; this behavior is browser-controlled

    Hi, try the following feature
And the standard app below can open multiple pages, which is very convenient. It's smarter than a browser if you don't constantly switch environments.
