First operation in planned production order scheduled months earlier than demand.

Hi everyone,

I’m running into a planning behavior in D365FO that I’m struggling to correct. For certain fabricated items (coverage group = FAB01), Master planning creates planned production orders many months earlier than the requirement date.

Example:

  • Requirement date (sales demand) = June 1, 2026

  • Planned order delivery = June 1, 2026

  • But the first operation (in resource A) is scheduled back in September 2025, leaving a huge gap.

  • Whereas, 2nd and 3rd Operation (in resource B and C) is scheduled a week before June 1, 2026

  • All of the resources have plenty of free capacity at any month.

What I’ve checked so far:

  • Coverage group → Coverage code = Period, Coverage period = 1 day, Negative days = 0, Positive days = 365

  • Item Coverage , Requirement date calculation (Fulfill minimum) = Today + procurement time

  • Freeze time fence = 90 days

  • Resource calendars are valid and capacity exists closer to demand

My questions:

Why is Master planning placing the first operation so far ahead of the demand date, even though resources are free? How to fix this?

    Hi,

Can you please test by reducing the Capacity Scheduling Time Fence (days) it will keep the resource requirement as near to the requirement date.
