Does Archiving "Slow Down" Posting?

Hi:
 
After enabling the archiving of Sales Orders using Sales & Receivables Setup, posting a Sales Order slows down considerably.
 
When this function is disabled, posting returns to normal speed.
 
Is this standard behavior for archiving?
