Word documents exported from BC open in the browser instead of downloading (RDLC report issue)

Hello everyone,

I am experiencing an issue in Dynamics 365 Business Central related to exporting RDLC reports as Word documents, and I am hoping someone can help clarify what might be causing it.

Situation
When a user runs a report and selects:
Send to → Word (Document)
the resulting .docx file automatically opens in the browser via Office Online.
For me and other users, the same action correctly triggers a file download rather than opening the file in the browser.
When the document opens in Office Online, the RDLC layout formatting changes, making the exported document unusable.

What has already been checked
To rule out client-side causes, we have tested the following:
  • Multiple browsers (Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and others)
  • Various browser settings, including disabling “Open Office files in the browser”
  • Multiple Microsoft Edge policies, including Office file viewer settings
  • Windows default application settings for .docx files
  • Business Central user settings
  • Any potentially relevant Microsoft 365 or device-based policies
Despite all of this, the affected user still has Word documents opening inside the browser, while the same export action triggers a download for other users.

Business Central exports the Word file consistently, but the browser forces this particular user to open the file online instead of downloading it. This results in the RDLC report layout being altered.

Are there known issues with Office Online or Business Central that could cause this difference in behavior?
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If one user opens Word inline and others download it, the difference is always the browser or Office profile, never RDLC.
For the affected user, Edge (or OneDrive / Microsoft 365) is configured to open Word (.docx) files in Office Online instead of downloading them. Other users download the file because their browser profile does not have this setting enabled.

    Hi,

Check if the URL of the file which is opening in the browser.

If the URL is of SharePoint or OneDrive then it is the OneDrive Setup of Business Central in which a file does not download in system but instead saves the file in OneDrive and open the file online with OneDrive link. In that case you can select the Open in Desktop option to see the file with word app.

In this case you can setup OneDrive to open directly in word app instead of Online.

If it is File URL, then it must be some profile setup which is causing the file to open in browser directly.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Dhiren.

    Hello ,

This behavior isn’t a Business Central or RDLC issue; BC always exports a .docx file, but what happens next is controlled by the user’s Microsoft 365 (OneDrive/SharePoint) account settings, not the browser or device. If a user has “Open Office files in the browser by default” enabled at the M365 level, the file is intercepted and opened in Office Online, which re-renders the document and breaks RDLC formatting, while other users without that setting get a normal download. That’s why changing browsers, Windows defaults, Edge policies, or BC settings has no effect — the fix is to update or enforce the M365/OneDrive file-handling setting for that user to download files instead of opening them online.

Hi, I'm not entirely sure, but it seems to be affected by the settings below. But this should affect all users. Is it only this user who set up OneDrive?

Hope this can give you some hints.
    Thanks.
