Security Filter

Hi,

My Business central user has the same security filter applied to both the Customer table and the Contact table, as well as the related tables.

The user can:

Access the Customer list with the filtered value.

Access the Contact Card directly from the Contacts List.

However, when the user tries to open the same contact through Customer Card → Contact, the following error appears: “A security filter has been applied to table Contact. You cannot access records that are outside of this filter.”

But the user is actually trying to access allowed data, and both the Customer and Contact records match the filter.

Could you please share your thoughts? What else needs to be checked or adjusted?

Thanks
I have the same question (1)

    Hello,

If Customer → Contact drill-down fails while Contacts list works, it means one related table is missing the same security filter.

Add the exact same filter to:

    Contact (5050)

    Customer (18)

Contact Business Relation (5054) ← usually the one causing the error

    Contact Company (company-type contacts)

Once all linking tables share the same filter, the navigation works.

    Regards,
    Oussama Sabbouh

    HI
This error usually happens because Business Central isn’t actually opening the contact you think it is. When you click Customer → Contact, BC always tries to open the specific linked contact (Primary Contact No., Sell-to Contact No., etc.), not just any contact that fits the filter.
So even if the customer itself matches the security filter, the contact linked to that customer might not.
A couple of things to check:
    1. Check which contact the customer is linked to
Open the customer card and look at:
    • Primary Contact No.
    • Sell-to Contact No.
    • Bill-to Contact No.
Try opening that exact contact directly from the Contact List as the user.
If they can’t open it, then the contact doesn’t match the security filter — that’s why the error shows up only when navigating from the Customer Card.

    2. Confirm the security filter values on the Contact table
Whatever field you’re filtering (e.g. Global Dimension, Salesperson Code, Territory, etc.), check that the linked contact has the same value.
Customers and contacts often don’t share the same dimension values, which triggers this issue.

    3. Check the Contact Business Relation table
BC uses table Contact Business Relation behind the scenes.
If you applied filters to related tables, make sure you didn’t accidentally block this link.

    4. Make sure the user doesn’t have multiple conflicting permission sets
Two permission sets filtering the same table can combine in unexpected ways.

    Hello,

The error occurs because when navigating from the Customer Card to the Contact, Business Central uses intermediate tables like Contact Business Relation to resolve the link.

If security filters on these related tables (Customer, Contact Business Relation, etc.) are not aligned with the filters on Customer and Contact, the join fails even though the final Contact record matches the filter.

To fix this, ensure consistent security filters across all related tables or relax/remove filters on linking tables, and verify that the user has read permissions on these tables.

    Hi,

Can you check that the same security filter is applied consistently to all related tables, including Business Relation and Contact Business Relation.

    Thanks

    Hi all,

Thank you for your valuable responses.

In my case, the user already has permissions for the related tables, including Business Relation and Contact Business Relation. We  applied  filter on the territory code. For these tables, the user has read permissions without any security filters.

    Thanks,
    AJ
