Can you post non-inventory items through the consumption journal?

I can post the consumption of non-inventory items to my production order via the production journal, but when trying through the consumption journal, BC tells me a bin is required.  Yet the consumption journal populates those items when I click "Cal. Consumption".  Have I missed something?
