Question re: setting up restricted user permissions

I am having difficulty setting up a restricted access user role.  I need the user to be able to view all the Account, Activity, and Contact records in CRM, as well as run reporting & view other users' activities, but not be able to change data in the records at all, except for their own activities and notes.   Has anyone set up a user account like this, and have an idea what the correct settings are?  So far, the profiles I've created are way too limited because it is not allowing the user to view the data or add activities at all.

    Handling security roles in Dyn CRM is rather complicated and I would generally suggest starting with a built in role, copying that and then removing the priviliges not required. Do it step by step and make sure it works. The role system is rather complex and has some unforseen requirements why this is usually a good idea.

    Check out a good book, like The CRM Field Guide, that treats this subject in depth on how to work the security model if you have not alread. It is not trivial.

    Thanks for the help.  I think I have the security role functioning pretty much the way my boss wants it now, and I'm trying to hunt down a copy of the Field Guide.  Thanks again for the advice and recommendation. Very much appreciated.
