Set up item pricing based on a different currency

Hi,

I need to set up a number of items that we buy in euro rather than in GBP.

I would like the cost and sell pricing in the item to be based on euro and not GBP so the exchange rate dictates the sell pricing when selling in stirling.

How do I set an item to be in a different base currency?

Many thanks for your help in advance

    Hi,
In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, item pricing is not directly stored in foreign currencies by default. The base currency for item costs and prices is typically your local (LCY) — in your case, GBP. However, you can configure purchasing and sales to operate in EUR using vendor currencies and customer currencies, and let the system handle the conversion using exchange rates.
    Define EUR as a Currency
    Go to:
    Search → "Currencies"

    • Ensure EUR exists.
    • Set Exchange Rate (or ensure it's updated regularly via a service).
    • If not set up, click "New", then:
      • Code = EUR
      • Description = Euro
      • Set relevant exchange rate service or update manually in Currency Exchange Rates.
    2. Set Vendor Currency to EUR
    Go to:
Search → "Vendors" → Choose the vendor supplying in EUR

    • Open the Vendor Card
    • Set the Currency Code = EUR
This ensures purchase documents use EUR and pricing is entered in EUR.
    3. Create or Update the Item
    Go to:
Search  â†’ "Items" → Choose or create the item
    • The Unit Cost on the Item Card is in LCY (GBP) by default.
    • But when you create a Purchase Price or Purchase Order from a vendor in EUR, you can enter EUR values.
If you want to store EUR-based cost, do the next step.
    4. Use Item Vendor Pricing in EUR
    Go to:
Item Card → Action → Navigate → Purchase → Vendor Item Catalog

    OR
    Search → "Purchase Prices"
    • Add a line for that item, vendor, and set currency = EUR
    • Enter Direct Unit Cost = EUR price
    • Optional: Set Starting/Ending Dates
This allows Business Central to retrieve EUR pricing when ordering from that vendor.
    5. Sales Pricing in LCY (GBP), Auto-Calculated
    Go to:
    Search  â†’ "Sales Prices"
    • Keep your sales prices in GBP, or use price calculation formulas that account for cost + margin.
    • Alternatively, create Customer-specific prices using Currency Code = EUR if needed.
To have the sales price calculated dynamically from EUR cost using exchange rate, you’ll need either:
    • Manual margin-based pricing rules, or
    • Custom extension or pricing logic using pricing worksheets or Power Automate.
