Advanced Warehouse Management – Handling Fractional Quantities in Work Orders

Hi everyone,

I am working with Advanced Warehouse Management (WHS) in D365 F&O and I’ve come across a scenario that I need guidance on.

Scenario 1 – Pipes:

  • We purchase pipes in EA (each pipe = 10 meters).

  • In BOM, production only consumes 2 meters per operation.

  • I expect that after picking, the remaining stock should be 0.8 EA (8 meters).

  • However, when I release the work order, the system picks 1 EA (full pipe) instead of 0.2 EA.

Scenario 2 – Adhesive/Fevicol Drum:

  • We purchase 1 drum = 10 KG.

  • Inventory is maintained in KG.

  • BOM consumes 100 g per operation.

  • In this case, no WHS work is generated for the pick.

Observations/Questions: I understand that WHS works with full inventory units, but I want to confirm if there’s any standard way to:

  1. Handle partial consumption in WHS work orders, while keeping inventory in EA for items like pipes.
  2. Enable WHS work generation when consumption is in decimals (like KG or meters).
I have the same question (0)

    Hi Shubham,

Please share the screenshot of your setup of Unit sequence group and also the Decimal Precision for Unit EA. As per my understanding in first scenario, work should be generated for 2 meters instead of 0.2 EA.. is it correct?

    Hi Neeraj,

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes as per your first understanding system is creating workorder for 2 m but when I try to perform the workorder, system is trying to transfer whole 1 EA which is wrong.

Unit sequence group where unit "m" I mapped in BOM unit instated for mark button "Default unit for material consumption".

Our goal is that whatever item we are purchase in any unit, there items will also maintain same in inventory unit and BOM unit will be different as consumption required. Most probably small unit will be BOM but not want maintain this in Inventory unit.

    Hi

For your scenario 1 check the below setup on the item master data. I suspect it could be 'Staging'

If yes change value to 'Order picking" and try again

    Hi

For your scenario 2 there can me many reasons why system is not generating picking work for the adhesive item.

Please share the error message for the item. Also are you checking work creation history log? Check the log and share screenshot here to suggest further.

    Thanks for your valuable feedback.

After testing further, I’ve confirmed my understanding:

When inventory is stored in a license plate-controlled (LP) location, the system does not allow partial picking in the same unit of measure. This is because the license plate represents a single physical handling unit (for example, one pipe or one drum), and the system maintains its integrity — it cannot split or partially consume from that LP.

However, when the same item is stored without a license plate (non-LP-controlled location), the system allows partial picking since it’s not restricted by LP handling logic and can directly reduce the open quantity in the location.

Scenario Location Type LP-Controlled Partial Pick Allowed? Explanation
Pipe (1 EA = 10 m) Bulk ✅ Yes ❌ No LP = physical pipe, cannot partially pick
Pipe (1 EA = 10 m) Bulk ❌ No ✅ Yes No LP, system can reduce fractional stock
Fevicol Drum (10 KG) Bulk ✅ Yes ❌ No LP = physical drum, cannot partially pick
Fevicol Drum (10 KG) Bulk ❌ No ✅ Yes No LP, can consume partial quantity
