Hello All,

we recently changed our reordering policies and the parameters of many items. We are beginning to test these parameters with the planning worksheets and using a new internal procedure.

We find that many suggestions from BC suggest us placing an order in the past. The Warning also indicates this. My question is why?

For example one item using fixed reorder quantity 100 trips the reorder point today due to sales order. This item has fixed reorder quantity 100 pieces and 8 weeks requisition lead time. The ending date is same as due date and is exactly 8 weeks from today. This makes sense to me, but why does the start date suggest starting 18 days in the past, as opposed to starting today?

In the warehouse locations I have 0 days incoming and outgoing delays. What other parameters affect the starting date? I thought that fixed order quantities always suggest forward dated ordering, which seems partly true in this case.

Thanks for your response, however I do not completely agree with your statement:

"The Due Date is based on when the Item is needed, with Fixed Reorder it is generally the day after you hit your Reorder Point."

This backwards date planning is true when using lot-for-lot method based, but fixed reorder quantity uses a forward date planning.

Otherwise why is the due date exactly 8W (lead-time calc) from date of reaching reorder point? I also proved this by using our standard calendar with this vendor and then adding 2 weeks of non-working days in August. This way it gives me starting date today and due date in 10W (8 lead time plus 2 non-working) as expected.

My issue is that somehow the vendor calendar or something related is causing partial forward calculation (lead time) and partial backward calculation (non-working days).

I'm no expert, and BC obviously does it that way; but I would say the usefullness of having a starting date in the past is debatable. In my mind, as time travel is not yet possible, I would see the forward extension of expected due dates as more helpful. If this "late" arrival of supply does not balance with demand, then I would better see what the realistic delay in a sales order will be, or I expedite the supply and adjust the expeced due date manually. That's just my thought on the topic.

Planning Worksheet: Starting Date

The Due Date is based on when the Item is needed, with Fixed Reorder it is generally the day after you hit your Reorder Point. The purpose of leaving the Order Date in the past is to let you know it is going to be late based on timing. The concept is you can then negotiate faster shipping or find an alternative supplier for the product to meet your Due Date. If you can't get the product faster, it enables you to inform your team (sales/production/etc.) of any potential shortages to allow for adjustments to schedules or updating customer's expectations. Some of this doesn't apply to Fixed Reorder if your Reorder Point is high enough to cover the delay, but the rules are still in place to keep your User's informed.

Hi,

The safety lead time is left blank.

I found that this vendor has a base calendar which has them closed 18 days in August. This is exactly the amount of days the starting date has been forwarded.

Why does the due date not shift forward 18 days as opposed to what it has suggested?
