Move from a CRM Online managed solution environment to unmanaged for internal development

A general question on solution deployment for internal development.

If a company has previously been deploying managed solutions for internal development to their production environment, is it worth changing future deployment of new solutions to unmanaged even though there’s already managed solutions in production?

The reason I ask is general practise I’ve adhered to previously was, if you control the environment and you’re dealing with enterprise data, deploy as unmanaged, it's less complicated.  I'm not sure if there's some massive gotcha trying to switch approach when the company has already gone down a certain route.

Note, the current managed solutions are split into smaller chunks of work, so it’s not just one large solution - it's a 2016 CRM online instance.

Hi, If the business is already using managed solutions internally then it makes sense to stay with managed solutions as it shows that they have the ALM release processes in place to support using managed solutions internally. Unless the Business Solution Architects have decided they want to switch to Unmanaged because they are concerned about having problems in the future with managed solutions due to the strict release process  that could be preventing them from remaining agile or flexible which unmanaged solution allows. However if you do decide to switch to unmanaged solutions because of issues you are experiencing with your releases the following blog by Shan Mcarthur will guide you on how to do this; community.adxstudio.com/.../2014-01-17-converting-crm-solutions-from-managed-to-unmanaged

Let me know if I can help you further :)

    Best Wishes, Raz

Interesting, thanks for the link.  Seems like once you plump for managed solutions, there's not an easy way to change course.  Thanks.
