Adding 2nd GP config to use local databases for test environment

During the presentations I made at GPUG Summit in Phoenix (exhausting but satisfying!) I admitted that I had never installed GP. I find that it would be very useful for me to go through the exercise... but I'm uncertain how to proceed.

That is, when I started my new position at GLC Minerals, the laptop assigned to me had GP 2016 R2 installed, and it points to our company databases on a SQL Server (2016).

What I would like to do is to set up a GP test environment on my laptop. I have SQL Server installed already on my laptop (2016 & 2017), and I have the process to make a copy of our production databases onto a test server... but the missing piece is how to utilize the existing installation of GP 2016 R2 to point to the local installation of the GP databases.

Could someone point me to an on-line resource that explains how to expand the reach of an existing installation of GP to encompass additional SQL servers? I hope soon to be able to install GP 2018 R2 as a test environment, too... but that can wait.

Thank you very much,

Steve Erbach

    Hello Steve,

    Dynamics GP is 'pointed' to different SQL instances by the ODBC DSN that they use to connect to the SQL Server/GP databases.

    support.microsoft.com/.../how-to-set-up-an-odbc-data-source-on-sql-server-for-microsoft-dynamics

    You could have one ODBC DSN pointing to the SQL 2016 instance and another to the SQL 2016 instance.

    If you need the existing Dynamics GP install to point to a different system database name, you can change the name of the system database that GP and GP Utilities looks for, by changing the following line in the Dex.ini file:

    Pathname=DYNAMICS/dbo/

    Let us know if you have any further questions.

    Thanks
