Alternate keys to create an EntityReference failed in Pre-Operation Plugin

Hi,

I observerd different behaviour of Alternate keys. If we use Alternate keys to create an EntityReference mentioned in below link it works fine and it is expected behaviour.

However when you try to use Alternate keys to create an EntityReference in related Pre-Operation of Plugin, it is failing with 'Generic SQL error'.

Has anybody noticed this behaviour/issue anytime before. Please provide your view on same. Happy to discuss.
