Hi there,

I need assistance with configuring the 'Packing Quantity' field in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. Could someone provide guidance on how to set up this field and explain its relationship to unit conversions within the system?

Thank you

RE: Packing quantity and Unit conversions in D365 SCM

After spending some time trying to figure out the solution for this. I finally found the missing link between product ‘Unit conversions’ and ‘Packing quantity’. For a Unit conversion rule to be applied on a product, another field must be also configured. This field is called ‘Unit sequence group ID’ and it can be found in the Warehouse FastTab.

Unit sequence groups define the physical handing units of the product and in what order units are converted to these physical handing units of measure when warehouse work is created. Unit sequence groups are a required setup if you are using the advanced warehousing functionality in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations.

For example, in my case, I have defined a Unit Conversion rule for an item to be 1 Box = 12 Can. This means, a 1 Box of this item converts to 12 Cans. The second step to correctly apply the unit conversion rule for the item is to create the needed sequence in the ‘Unit sequence groups’ screen as below:

After the sequence group is created, the field ‘Unit sequence group ID’ in the Product Master page should be configured to use the created sequence:

Now, when creating a Sales Order, the Packing quantity will show the proper unit conversion:

    Hi Emma,

Thanks for replying. Here are some screenshots with some description:

    1. Unit conversions can be reached through Released Products screen under the Product menu:

When clicked, you can then setup the product-specific conversion as below:

Now, when creating a manual Sales Order for example, you get the Packing quantity field as shown:

The issue is that the Unit conversion was not applied to the Packing quantity as it was setup 1 Box = 12 Can !!!

    Thanks

    Hi Siv,

Thank you very much for the detailed steps. It seems though that the steps are for a different version of D365 F&O. I wasn't able to follow or do the steps.

    Hi!

Could you please add some print screens to your instruction?

I cannot find the unit conversion info under the General tab for example. Also where I can find the packing duty information that you refer to.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

To configure the 'Packing Quantity' field and understand its relationship to unit conversions, you need to follow these steps:

    1. Set up Units of Measure:
    2. Navigate to 'Product Information Management' in Dynamics 365.
    3. Select 'Product' or 'Released Product' to configure the units of measure.
    4. Create or select the desired product and go to the 'General' tab.
    5. In the 'Units of Measure' section, define the base unit of measure (e.g., each) and other relevant units of measure (e.g., case, box, pallet).
    6. Assign conversion factors between the base unit and the other units of measure.
    7. Define Packaging Dimensions:
    8. In the same 'General' tab of the product configuration, scroll down to the 'Package Details' section.
    9. Enter the dimensions of the packaging unit (e.g., length, width, height) if applicable.
    10. Specify the 'Packing Quantity' field, which represents the number of items contained in one packaging unit.
    11. Configure Unit Conversions:
    12. In Dynamics 365, navigate to 'Product Information Management' and select 'Product' or 'Released Product.'
    13. Choose the desired product and go to the 'General' tab.
    14. In the 'Units of Measure' section, click on the 'Conversions' button.
    15. Set up the conversion rates between different units of measure.
    16. Ensure that the conversion rates are correctly defined to reflect the 'Packing Quantity' (e.g., 1 case = 10 each, 1 box = 5 each).

By configuring the 'Packing Quantity' field and unit conversions, Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management can effectively track the number of items in each packaging unit. This information becomes crucial for various inventory management processes such as stock counts, sales order fulfillment, and shipping.

It's important to note that the specific steps and terminology may vary depending on the version and configuration of Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management you are using.

    Best regards,

    Siv Sagar
