Can you modify Opportunity status options?

I would like to add a status option to the existing won, lost and open opportunity statuses. Is there a way to do that or is this set in stone? I've learned how to change Status Reason, but I need to add a status called Potential, so that doesn't really fit in one of the existing categories.

Unfortunately the Status (or StateCode) of an entity is locked down to the system values so you'd have to work your new value into one of the Status Reasons that correspond to one of the existing States.

We have run into similar situations. On closer examination of the business process, something like Potential is a Status Reason ie subset of open. We just adjust the advanced find views to either include or exclude these types of open opportunities as it makes best sense for the client
