Hello everyone,

I’m exploring the transition from Dynamics NAV to Business Central and would like to understand the major benefits businesses experience after the upgrade. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central offers enhanced cloud capabilities, automation, and integration — but I’d love to hear from professionals who have gone through this migration.

What are the key benefits of moving from Dynamics NAV to Business Central?
How does the transition improve scalability, reporting, and overall business performance?
Are there any best practices or lessons learned you can share from your migration journey?

Your insights, real-world experiences, or success stories would be very helpful for anyone considering the move from Dynamics NAV to Business Central.

    Hi,

Migrating from Dynamics NAV to Business Central isn’t just a version upgrade — it’s a strategic digital transformation.

You move from an on-prem ERP to a fully connected, future-ready platform that enhances visibility, automation, and scalability across your business.

Business Central’s SaaS model lets Microsoft handle hosting, backups, performance tuning, and updates. No more local servers or manual maintenance

According to me, the most important reason you should consider while migrating from NAV to BC is Enhanced Integration Across the Microsoft Ecosystem.

    • Deep integration with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, Excel, OneDrive) – users can create sales quotes or invoices directly from emails.

    • Connects easily with Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI) for automation and custom low-code extensions.

    Hope this helps.

Hi, Another viewpoint: The last version of NAV, NAV2018, will be completely discontinued on Jan 11, 2028. If you don't upgrade by then, Microsoft will not provide any security updates or support.

    Thanks.

    Hi,
Moving from NAV to Business Central offers many benefits — mainly the cloud flexibility, automatic updates, and improved integration with the Microsoft ecosystem.

Business Central uses the AL language and extensions, which makes customizations much easier to maintain and upgrade.

It also provides a modern web interface and powerful analytics tools through Power BI, giving users a more efficient and connected experience.

Below is matrix for comparison and also sharing supported links

Feature  Dynamics NAV Dynamics 365 Business Central
Deployment Primarily on-premises, requiring in-house server infrastructure and maintenance. Cloud-first (SaaS), with Microsoft managing infrastructure, backups, and updates. An on-premises option is also available.
User Interface Traditional, menu-driven desktop interface. Modern, intuitive web-based interface aligned with Microsoft 365 products.
Updates/Upgrades Manual, often complex, and requires significant IT effort. Automatic, regular updates from Microsoft, ensuring the system is always current.
Integration Limited native integration, often requires custom development or third-party connectors. Seamless, out-of-the-box integration with the broader Microsoft ecosystem (Microsoft 365, Power BI, Power Platform).
Licensing Typically a higher upfront cost with a perpetual license model. Subscription-based (monthly/per-user) model, which can be more cost-effective for cash flow.
Customization Highly customizable using the C/AL language, but customizations can complicate upgrades. Customizable using the modern AL language and through extensions/apps via Microsoft AppSource, which streamlines future upgrades.
AI & Analytics Basic reporting tools. Includes built-in Power BI integration and AI-driven insights (like Copilot capabilities).
Mobility Requires additional setup for mobile access. Built-in mobility, allowing access from any device with an internet connection.
