Create view to show all activity for a specific category

My goal is to show all phone calls, tasks and appointments that have the same value in a custom field (Activity Category) which is a global option set. I have added to the activities, but now I realize I cannot add it to the activity base entity. I have tried to make a custom search for this, but I am having trouble grouping being able to filter on all of the activity types. Is there a way to create this view?

If there is not, would there be a best practice to handle this, maybe use different campaigns but I am not familiar with them. If this is the way I should go, if you have any resource on how to set this up please let me know.

Thank you,

Mike

    Hi Michael,

Hm..I think it is not possible, not using the CRM View.

Because basically id you have added field with global option set for all activity entities, for example Phone Call, Task, Appointment, the field is stored in 3 different table, Phone Call, Task, and Appointment. This is not stored in the Activity entity....

So that, you cannot display this field in the Activity Column nor as Filter Criteria because the field will not be recognized in the Activity base entity (ActivityPointer).

You can have it done using Report, you can join it manually..

Maybe this blog can help you to understand the Relationship.

*If you are using OnPremise then it will be easier, see this section:

"Retrieve All Activities with Specific Field from Activity Type Entity"

    And this is another reference.

    community.dynamics.com/.../144836.aspx

Btw, what campaign you are referring to?

"...best practice to handle this, maybe use different campaigns..."

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

    Hi Michael,

You can create such views in standard CRM, however, you can do achieve the same by following:

    1. Create a report

    2. Create a silverlight view/page (inbuilt with the query you want for activities)

This is really helpful thank you, I plan on building a custom report using your blog post as a guide, Regarding the campaign, my idea was to create a campaign for each of the options in the global option set, then use the activity part to look up to the specific campaign. I was planning to set a workflow to set the regarding based on the option selected in the global option set. I would need to figure it out from there. In doing a small amount of testing, your option is far better for brining in more data.

Then I could just use that in my dashboards as well.

    Thank you,

    Mike

    Michael,

    You are using onpremise?

Yes you can use that blog to query the activities and get your specific field and group it..

Put the report to Dashboard it is also possible, but this is SSRS, not the Chart in CRM, okay :)

    Thank you.
