ISV Development question about updating your extension

As an ISV that developed an extension, I had a question about fixing a field or function after the extension has been published. If we notice after a publication of the extension that we have a field name on a BC page incorrect, can we fix and republish at any time? Do we still need to go through the same process of testing and validation that is done on the initial load?

Secondly, if for some reason our regression testing didn't expose a data issue and we need to "Patch" the code, how does that work? Do we fix and then re-publish to the store through the normal channels, or is there an expedited way to solve that?
