Gents,

Anybody been able to install the workflow on multiple servers? I have a client who wants to install the workflow on two servers with network load balancing, but I couldn't find anything related to such a structure in the installation manual.

I been able to install the SharePoint 2010 Foundation as a server farm and created the web application, the workflow worked perfectly on the first server but it unable to be installed on the second server with the below error:

I noticed the below error in the event viewer but nothing helpful:

    Hi Mohammad,

I apologize but I am confused as this setup wouldn't even work. If you are install Workflow to two diffenent locations you would be using two different Workflow sites as well. There should be no need for this process for load balancing. What is the client's reason for wanting this besides load balancing (installing on two locations which won't work will not help with load balancing)?

Actually it is not two "locations", it is one location with two servers, the customer is following the high availability standards and wants to have the workflow installed on two servers, so if the first server failed the other server will go up.

For the workflow in specific, the database has to be shared between workflow servers as same documents will need to be moved from the first server into the other if the first server failed and documents are being saved in the content database not in GP databases.

That’s why we have created two servers (WEBAPPS01, WEBAPPS02) and configured the NLB to hold WEBAPPS name and redirects to both servers whichever is online.

Thank you for the update. It appears you want this setup for recovery not really load balancing. Load balancing is used to direct users to another machine when another machine is being heavily used.

As far as setting this up we haven't tested this process so I can't really provide much information on it. Our web applications aren't meant to be back up 10 minutes after a failure. You really need to focus on the failover of your SQL databases including your Content database as this holds the data which should be top priority.

    Hello Jonathan,

Thank you for your help in this regard and thank you for your usual support.

Actually the SQL is already clustered for fail over on multiple servers and the high availability maintained as needed, but the customer used to have many difficulties recovering the workflow in the past due to the load they currently have and that was behind the idea of having multiple server running the company web applications specially the workflow and the e-requisition, where if the server or the application failed for any reason we make sure that the downtime minimized as much as possible.

Normally they used to have documents failed to be submitted and periodic failures for web services with long record of unwanted downtimes, this encouraged them to setup this environemnt and wanted to have this implemented so they can minimize the time needed to recover by switching to the other server and maintaining the server with issues separately without annoying end users with technical assignments.

Do you think that this might not be doable? Should we initiate an incident with the support team to help in this matter? And is this error really related to the fact that the workflow is installed on this database and cannot be installed again?

    Again appreciate your help.

    Hi Mohammad,

You could open a support case but there is not really much that can be done with the setup you are looking for. Typically if there is a failure you will need to reinstall Workflow. You would not need to setup the Workflow's again as that information would be held in the databases you are moving over.

    Hello Jonathan,

Thank you for your valuable help, I would like to metion that the setup I am looking for is the same setup available in the documentation, it is simply described in page 15 of the installation manual but nothing on how to perform this on the other server:
