Custom report development for CRM online

ReportReport
Posted on by 790

Hi,

I am just starting development in CRM (on report) and I am a little confused as to what all is needed for it.

My requirement is develop a report for CRM online. I have Visual Studio 2015.

Reading online i found out that different version required different things like SSDT & CRM extension etc. and all of which are not compatible with all Visual Studio releases.

So I would like to know what all is required for my development.

I have Visual Studio 2015 and was trying to install the extensions but installation fails always.

After looking online i do not think i even need it. Can someone point me in right direction ?

(Edited: Finally worked with the SSDT tools of older version and CRM extensions; Latest SSDT kept getting corrupted after installation of CRM extensions on Win 7. )

Thanks,

Anoop

    Hello,

You need SQL Server Data Tools based on VS 2012 - www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Unfortunately at the moment this is only version supported with FetchXml Authoring extension that allows develop FetchXml report for CRM Online.

So does this mean now I purchase VS 2012 as well just to be able to develop reports ??

    That is really amazing

Or is there a work around for this ?

You don't need to purchase it. SQL Server Data tools are free and available for download by url provided earlier.

Ok. Thanks for that info i thought that VS 2012 tool can only be installed on VS 2012. I will do this and update thread soon.

So i tried to install the SSDT 2012 but the setup kept failing with error "Setup tried to perform unauthorised operation" and provides and option to either "Retry" or continue . Upon choosing continue it juts crashes out.

I am looking in event view and searching online help at the moment if anyone has encountered similar situation do tell please.

Note: I had earlier installed SSDT 2015 whih i uninstalled then restarted etc done. Also specifically installed all pre-requisites mentioned on the page before installation.

One problem I do still see is the VS2012 the pre-requisite installed when launched from programs menu show an incompatibility with current OS.

You need SSRS or MSBI tool that comes with ,

when you install the sql server reporting services along with sql server instance.

SSRS reports are not to do anything with visual studio.

but to develop .rdl file you need ssrs report.

This is as per my knowledge and understanding .

Yes I understand that but i already have purchased VS 2015 so now I just want to be able to develop CRM online reports using VS 2015. While installing the pre requisites software for SSDT 2012 the above VS 2012 installed.

As I mentioned before at the moment it's not possible to develop report for CRM Online using VS 2015. You will have to use SSDT 2012. Also I have no idea what's wrong with installation and I believe MS can help you with troubleshoting of installation process.

Ok so that means its no point having VS 2015 if I am developing reports.

I will have to get VS 2012 and then get the SSDT installed to work on reports. Correct ?

But I if i do not have license key for VS2012 and using only trial version then later on when the trial version expires i will not be able to develop reports ?

( Sorry I am very new to this hence may not be accurately specifying the problem or not understanding suggestions )
