Re-import fails

Hello,

I'm trying to export a large set of data from CRM so that I can edit some information and then re-import that data. I'm running into an error every time I try to re-import the file though. I go through the process of exporting, selecting the option to "make this data available for re-importing by including required column headings", and saving the file as an XML Spreadsheet 2003. I then make my changes, save the file again (locally), and then try to upload, but I'm getting an error message that says "The file that you uploaded is invalid and cannot be used for updating records." I'm not making any changes to the file type after I've made my changes (still an XML Spreadsheet 2003).

I've been doing lots of testing and reading online, and I found that if I manually enter the changes to the data, the import succeeds. When I try to copy the data in from another spreadsheet, the import fails. I can't manually edit each record, because there is too many, and I'd like to copy the updated information from another sheet. I'm making sure that the data type for the content I copy over is the same (Text), but it's still failing.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, or know of a solution? The Microsoft support guy I worked with couldn't give me an answer.

Thanks in advance,

Anthony

    RE: Re-import fails

You must be changing the columns in some way when you copy from another sheet. Your sheet must have exactly the same columns including the hidden columns. You also need to retain the hidden tab. I suggest you export a single row and do your copy and paste then compare the original xml with the new xml to find out what you are changing other than the data.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Scott! The column in which I was editing data was supposed to be text. After reading your response, I opened the document in a text editor, and found that all the values in the column were all being labeled as numbers. Within the text editor, I did a Find and Replace to change all the XML tags from Number to Text, then saved it and re-imported the file, and everything updated successfully. Thanks again.

For those who tried this and didn't work , go through the below link. It worked. Trimming was necessary.
